Quality Management in Automotive: What Labs Need | [FP]-LIMS

Quality management in the automotive industry: What materials labs really need

PPAP, ppm complaint targets, end-to-end traceability, SPC, supplier audits – the requirements on quality labs in the automotive sector are uncompromising. What a LIMS has to deliver in this environment, and why [FP]-LIMS is at home in the materials and metallurgical testing labs of automotive suppliers and OEMs.

Key message

Automotive quality labs work under pressure: 24/7 shift operation, single-digit ppm complaint targets, audit-ready at all times, every batch traceable down to the individual part. [FP]-LIMS provides the data foundation for exactly these requirements – SPC, audit trail, SAP® QM integration, end-to-end traceability across material, batch, and test.

What materials and metallurgical testing labs in the automotive industry really need

Anyone at home in the automotive industry knows the pressure: OEMs expect single-digit ppm complaint rates from their suppliers, end-to-end traceability of every installed component, and audit-ready quality documentation at the push of a button. The materials and metallurgical testing lab sits at a critical point in this chain – it decides whether a melt, a semi-finished product, or a batch is allowed to reach production.

What does a LIMS have to deliver in this environment, concretely?

  • Statistical Process Control (SPC) – trend and dispersion analysis across thousands of measurement points, automatic and in real time
  • End-to-end traceability – every measurement must be traceable back to the melt, the batch, the supplier
  • Audit-ready documentation – pass supplier and customer audits without days of preparation
  • First-article inspection (PPAP-relevant) – structured data capture, release workflows, version management
  • Material certificate management – mill test certificates 3.1 / 3.2 to EN 10204, generated automatically
  • Multi-shift ready – 24/7, even during ERP outages, with a clear permissions concept across multiple shifts

Concrete use cases in the automotive materials lab

Incoming goods inspection at suppliers

Every delivered batch has to be inspected before processing – chemical composition by OES or XRF, mechanical properties by hardness testing, tensile testing, or metallographic examination. [FP]-LIMS pulls the inspection lot automatically from SAP® QM, the lab technician scans the batch barcode at the spectrometer, the measurement values flow directly into the LIMS, and the usage decision flows back into the ERP automatically. Thirty minutes of paperwork per batch turn into thirty seconds.

Melt control and charge correction in foundries

In aluminium and iron foundries that produce brake discs, engine blocks, or structural castings for the automotive industry, charge correction is a central topic. [FP]-LIMS analyzes OES spectrometer data in real time, compares it against specification limits, and – where necessary – proposes concrete correction additions. This saves melting costs and reduces scrap.

Mill test certificates 3.1 / 3.2 to EN 10204

Every batch shipped to the OEM is accompanied by a compliant mill test certificate. These are generated in [FP]-LIMS directly from the test data that is already cleanly structured in the system – at the push of a button, in corporate design, on request sent automatically by email or pushed via the EDI interface to the customer.

Supplier audits and ppm reporting

At every supplier audit, the OEM auditor expects answers in minutes, not hours. How many complaints came in last quarter? Which batch did they relate to? Which test results were on file? [FP]-LIMS keeps this data central, searchable, and exportable. SPC charts, Cpk values, and ppm statistics update live in the dashboard.

IATF 16949, VDA & co. – where we help (and where we don’t)

A word on standards in the automotive industry, since many things get conflated here:

What we are NOT
  • IATF 16949 certified – that is a certification for the QM systems of automotive suppliers as a whole, not for software
  • APQP / PPAP workflow tool – these processes run in specialized APQP tools or in SAP® QM
  • A complete QM software – we are a LIMS, not a QMS
What we deliver
  • The data foundation for IATF audits – traceability, audit trail, SPC – exactly what auditors check
  • VDA-relevant test data (e.g., VDA 6.x) – cleanly documented and analyzable
  • ISO/IEC 17025 support – if your materials lab is accredited
  • SAP® QM integration – seamless data flow into the higher-level QM processes

To put it differently: [FP]-LIMS does not replace a QM system. But we are the tool that makes your materials and metallurgical testing labs audit-ready and structures the data so that IATF, VDA, or ISO audits are passed without stress.

Interfaces: SAP® QM, OES, hardness testing – it’s all there

In the automotive industry, the system landscape is complex: ERP (often SAP®), production control system (PCS), QM system, supplier portals (Covisint, SupplyOn), specialized measurement software per instrument. The LIMS has to slot into this landscape seamlessly.

  • SAP®-certified integration with SAP S/4HANA® – bidirectional data exchange with SAP® QM, automatic intake of inspection lots and feedback of results
  • Over 100 pre-configured instrument drivers – SPECTRO, Bruker QMatrix, Hitachi, common hardness testers, tensile testing machines, metallographic analysis software
  • EDI and supplier-portal connectivity – on request, direct data exchange with customer systems via open APIs
  • Browser interface for production management and auditors – read access without local installation, ideal for external auditors

Technical details on connectivity are covered in the article LIMS interfaces: SAP S/4HANA® & ERP integration.

Frequently asked questions about LIMS in the automotive industry

Is [FP]-LIMS IATF 16949 certified?

No. IATF 16949 is a certification for the QM systems of automotive suppliers as a whole – it is not awarded to software. What [FP]-LIMS does support are the core requirements that get scrutinized in an IATF audit: traceability, audit trail, SPC, documented inspection processes. We are the tool your IATF-certified company needs for its materials labs.

Can [FP]-LIMS handle APQP and PPAP processes?

APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) and PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) are higher-level QM processes that typically run in specialized APQP tools, in SAP® QM, or in the PLM system. [FP]-LIMS provides the test data from the materials and metallurgical testing lab for these processes – cleanly structured, audit-ready, ready to hand over.

How fast is go-live in an automotive lab?

For standard setups – a materials lab with common instruments (OES, XRF, hardness testing, tensile testing) and SAP® integration – first users are productive within a few days. For complex multi-plant structures with grown data models, we plan several weeks. Data migration from legacy systems (often spreadsheets or DIA2000) is part of the standard implementation scope.

Does [FP]-LIMS also work without SAP®?

Yes. Our SAP® certification is a plus for SAP® customers, but it’s not a precondition. Via open APIs, we also connect proALPHA, abas, Microsoft Dynamics, Infor, and customer-specific ERP systems. Details in the article LIMS interfaces & integration.

What about first-article inspection – can we capture it in the LIMS?

Structured capture of the test data, version management, release workflows – yes, that’s what [FP]-LIMS does. The full PPAP workflow including all 18 elements (Design Records, FMEA, Control Plan, etc.) is run by many of our customers in a dedicated APQP tool or directly in SAP® – and they use [FP]-LIMS for the materials and metallurgical testing portion.

How many shifts and operators does [FP]-LIMS support?

Any number. In the Professional Edition, user and instrument counts are not limited. We have customers running three shifts, 50+ operators, and 20+ connected instruments in continuous operation. The permissions concept allows role-based separation (operator, shift lead, lab management, QM officer).
